CANOE POLO
What is canoe polo?
Canoe polo is a competitive, team sport. It involves two teams, made up of 5 players, each allowed up to 3 substitutes. The aim of the game is to shoot the ball into the oppositions net, whilst the defending team (team who do not have possession of the ball) employ a number of tactics to reduce the chances of this happening!
If you have never seen a game of polo being played before a good introduction is to watch this video:
The start of this video gives a great introduction into the world of polo!
Can I play canoe polo?
Of course! As a club, we accept complete beginners and most of our team who play now have never played before university! We run a number of sessions a week, these will be on either a Wednesday or a Sunday morning, either at a local lake in Sheffield, or a polo pitch just outside of Sheffield. Anyone is welcome to these at any point in the year, whether you have just joined the club or are wanting to start playing polo part way through the year.
What type of competitions do you enter?
As a club we enter a number of leagues, these include the North West and Central Division 4, and the Ladies Development league (North), these leagues are aimed at newer players who don’t have much experience and want to develop their polo skills. A long side these, we enter a number of competitions across the year, which include the London Paddington tournament, Cardiff University tournament and the famous BUCS, and not forgetting our varsity match against university of Sheffield in April every year!
